Using Cast Iron Cookware

I know you aren't supposed to use soap on a cast iron pan, but I found one at the bottom of a pile of dirty dishes thats really crusty, and I don't know how to get it clean without soap. Any ideas? Can I use soap if I re-season it? (How do i do that?)

I have a cast iron skillet with grill bumps and a cast iron press to go with it [for paninis]. I use it all the time but I have no idea how to clean it properly. I am always left with residue and melted cheese all over it. Is there something I need to buy?
