I used lots of crisco before cooking cornbread in my cast iron skillet but some stuck anyway. I'm not sure 100% how to take care of a cast iron skillet or if I can even use water to get the cornbread off! Does anyone know what I can do to get the skillet clean without damaging it?

Soak it in hot soapy water or a faster way would be to just fill the pan with water and boil for about 15 mins.
Have you tried boiling water in it? Sometimes, if you let water boil in the skillet, the nastiest will eventually come out. You may want to type in “goggle search” using this search, type in “cleaning of cast iron.” I used to use cast iron for camping that the boiling water thing worked most of the time.
i have 2 cast iron skillets and with both of mine if food gets stuck on it i cover pan with a layer of salt then add water heat till just simmering and then the stuff will lift easily….
tip out water and wipe out with paper towel…
then lightly spray skillet with oil and wipe out excess oil..
i dont use soap on the skillets just a little hot water…
good luck…
Yes, you can put water in a cast iron skillet. Do not put soap, however. It takes a lot to ruin a cast iron skillet – just run hot water in the pan and scrap at the stuck cornbread with the scrubby side of your sponge, or your fingernail, for that matter. After you have cleaned the pan, be sure to put it on the burner for a few minutes with the heat on to dry it completely… otherwise it will rust.
you can put some water in it and boil the stuck food loose or put hot water in it and put a dryer sheet in it and let sit for a few minutes and it will come out easily. Also you should temper it in before reusing it. By this I mean take a paper towel and get some shortening on it and wipe the pan and then heat it really hot and let it cool and wipe it out and it will never rust.never wash cast iron on soay water and unless it has something stuck in it you should not wash it–just wipe it out and hang it up until next use.
I would try something like a cooking spray. Let it sit awhile..may just wipe out. A cast iron skillet shouldn’t stick if seasoned properly. One thing I know is you can’t wash it in water with soap. If you must do that, you have to re-season it.
Next time try the cornbread in a glass baking dish in the oven.
I use cast iron too. Lodge is who manufactures mine, since they are pre-seasoned the company doesn’t recommend using any kind of soap in them at all. Let the pan cool and just let
it soak in water – no soap. If you would stop and think about it for a minute the heat from the fire will kill any germs and these pans usually are used over an open flame anyway.
After soaking over night I rinse and wipe them out with a paper towel putting them away.
Heat the pan and pour some wine in
Just rinse your skillet off under the sink. Let it soak if need be to soften whatever is stuck to it. If you need to use a scouring pad of sorts fine, but don’t put it in the dishwasher. Cast Iron only gets better as more and more flavors are absorbed by the pan.
This sounds bad, but flavors from everything including cornbread to eggs to beans and ground beef are permanently stored in that skillet and it brings a more well rounded flavor to everything you cook.
Put it back on the stove on low heat with a touch of water in it to dry completely (and prevent it from rusting)
NO SOAP !!! Just use water…

Heat your cast iron oven medium heat with 2 cups water and 1/2 cup cider vinegar. Bring to a boil, then lightly scrub out and rinse. Then return to heat to dry out the cast iron
My wife said to use a product called a “dobie” w/ water as this will never scratch your pans. They are located near the sponges at your local supermarket or store. They are in a green colored box.
The green scouring pads (e.g. Scotch Bright) and water should take it off. No soap. Then, you must make sure you dry the skillet completely. To do this, put it on the stove using high for a couple of minutes. You’ll see all the water evaporate.
first you must not wash the skillet in water. you should add crisco to the skillet warm it up then just wipe it out. any time you use your skillet all you have to do is wipe it out.
