Cast Iron Grilling Pan – Instruction Is Not To Use Steel Wool To Clean. Does It Mean Scrubbing Sponge Is Fine?

Hi, what is that standard (usually green) Scrubbing Sponge made of?
Is it OK to use a Scrubbing Sponge to clean a cast iron pan or is it like
steel wool which I have instructions saying should not be used? THANKS.

Anytime you use any abrasive cleaner on cast iron it will get rusty. If you really want it to be clean you usually have to use abrasives but then dry it completely, give it a light spray with some cooking oil like Baker’s Secret. Then wipe the oil off with a paper towel and store it with the remaining oil on it. Just be sure to give it a good rinse and dry before using it the next time because the residual oil will hold dust. There is a way to “season”these pans in your oven which is really baking a coating of oil onto the pans which hardens the oil and makes it like a non-stick but it will always feel tacky.`
Your pan might have a non-stick surface already on it in which case you shouldn’t need any abrasives to get it clean. I use a plastic scrub brush on my non-stick cast iron griddle and it works very well.

Best to avoid using the green scrubbie things unless you use one very lightly. They’re not as abrasive as steel wool but can defintely remove the seasoning from cast iron if you scrub hard.
